9 Tips to Improve Your Nail Health

If your nails are thin and breaking all the time, it’s very likely that you need to improve the health of your nails. I’ve spent a lot of time recently trying to improve the health of my nails. After never taking care of them for years, it’s been a long journey trying to improve them. Here are 9 of the best tips that I’ve come across while trying to improve my nails.

Trim Your Nails Regularly

This one is pretty obvious, but not one I used to do. If your nails get really long, particularly if they’re not very strong, they’ll begin to break and split. Even if I’m not painting my nails, I’ll trim them to avoid breakage.

Use Moisturizer and Cuticle Oil Often

If your skin tends towards dryness this is even more important. You want to make sure that the skin around your nails is well taken care of. This prevents peeling skin, dry, breaking cuticles, and helps keep the whole area healthy. The oils and moisturizers will also help your nails!

Be Careful When Filing Your Nails

Even though this is fairly common knowledge now: file your nails in ONE direction. They’ll begin to split otherwise.

Use Top and Base Coat

Base coats protect your nails from chemicals in the polish. It also helps the polish cling and enhances the potency of the polish color. Top coats protect the polish itself and help keep your nails healthy.

Bonus Pro Tip: Add another coat of your top coat every few days to keep your manicure lasting longer.

Avoid Acrylics or Gels

Get as few acrylic or gel manicures as you can, they’re really bad for your nails. The more you get them, the thinner and more delicate your nails will get over time. Even just one set of acrylics can take a long time to repair your nails after.

Give Your Nails a Break

Even if all you do is use standard nail polish, give your nails a break every once in a while. Let them breathe; just like you do for your face!

Quit Peeling Off Your Polish

One of my Achilles heels with my nails.. I’m always peeling my polish after a few days. I’m hoping to work on improving this habit because peeling your polish off peels off layers of nails, leaving divots and making your nails weaker.

Don’t Bite Your Nails

Another issue I used to have; nail biting. To this day I don’t know how I stopped. But biting your nails constantly weakens them. Even if you’re just biting off a hangnail. Keep nail clippers in your purse along with a file to avoid any issues.

Take Biotin Supplements

Taking biotin will help your nails and hair grow faster and stronger. Just know that it may take time for you to see because it takes a while for newly grown nail to get beyond the nail bed.
