How to Keep Your Makeup On This Summer

Trying to keep makeup on in the summer can be a frustrating and often futile prospect. Most of the time it feels like every time you go outside it all just melts off.

But there are ways to extend the life of your makeup past what you’d expect; though not indefinitely. If you’re having trouble keeping your makeup from melting away in the hot, humidity of summer, try these tips!

Primers and Setting Sprays

Adding primers and setting sprays to your look can really increase its longevity. Primers give your foundation a base to sit on. Make sure you choose a primer that’s compatible with your skin type and your foundation. That will keep your foundation on, and it from separating.

Most pore filling and oil control primers will help you keep your makeup on, but if you have dry skin you’ll want to use something more hydrating to balance out the sweat controlling products you use later.

Setting sprays glue down your makeup! It’s basically hairspray for your face. Go for oil control or long wearing setting spray. Some of the best (in my opinion) include the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray and the L’Oreal Infallible Setting Mist.

Wear Less Makeup

Obviously this depends on your preferences and situations, but if you can, try going more natural and wearing fewer face products. Tinted moisturizers with concealer, light powdering, etc. If you’ve got less makeup on, it won’t be super obvious or noticeable when/if it melts off.

Lighten Up Your Outfit

If you don’t really want to lighten up your makeup, try to lighten up your outfits a bit to prevent sweat.

Try shorts or skirts instead of jeans or leggings. Choose lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool as well. And if you choose lighter colors, you’ll stay cooler as well.

Pin up longer hair in ponytails, braids, buns, or other styles to keep it off of your neck. If ponytails give you headaches, try special hair ties like the Invisibobble or try something like a French or Dutch braid.

Seek Out Longevity

Choosing products that are long wearing will help you keep your makeup looking solid even in humidity and heat. If you’re wearing a full face, make sure you powder plenty and bake where you can.

Use an eyeshadow primer too, it’ll help keep your eyeshadow still. Protip: Avoid wearing eyeshadow under your eyes- this creases and smudges badly when you sweat.

Blotting Papers

Blotting papers can be super helpful! These thin, cheap papers allow you to blot away sweat and excess oil without disturbing makeup. elf Cosmetics has some that are only $1 a pack, so it’s worth a try.

Try Waterproof Makeup

Some products that run when you sweat, such as eyeliner or mascara, can be swapped over to a waterproof formula to help prevent this issue. Just make sure you get a good makeup remover that can get waterproof makeup off without excessive rubbing so you don’t hurt the delicate skin around your eyes!
